Stolen!

Since Owen and I got our bikes early on in the season, we have used them every single day and it has completely changed our Lanzarote experience. We are able to cycle around the whole of Playa Blanca and see little places that know one else would think about going to.

We recently went to the Papagyo Beaches, which are beautiful secluded beaches with nothing but golden sand and clear waters.
But somebody has ruined that now because they stole Owen’s bike right from outside work. We searched everywhere for it – even the guests at the hotel were looking. It’s so unfair on poor old Owen; he was really upset and is lost with out it. I am sure who ever stole it will get what they deserve!

Street Cheer:

During the height of the summer season, our hotel offers extra things like a soccer school and, for the girls, a street dance cross cheer leading classes, known as Street Cheer. Unfortunately our Street Cheer coach left and with only 5 weeks left of the programme and it would be silly to hire a new person. Instead, I will be doing it along side my entertaining.

It’s very similar to something called e3 Academy that I did last year but with pompoms. I make up some routines for the girls to perform on stage. It’s actually great fun for me and a slight change of scenery in some ways, breaking out of the day to day routine – something fresh for me to work on.
Seeing old faces is always very nice. One of the little girls I taught last year is on holiday and has been coming along to my Street Cheer. She calls it Natalie’s Dancing School!! How sweet!

Olympics:

It’s a bit sad knowing something phenomenal is happening so close to home and you’re in a different country. Just imagining the atmosphere that is going on in London and across the UK right now is difficult, it must be crazy.
I have been watching some little bits of the games that are going on.
London 2012 Olympic Logo
I remember writing last year about a guest we had in Ibiza, who was an Olympic swimmer, James Goddard. Well it just so happens that he made it to the final of the men’s 200m medley for Team GB. I was able the to watch the final and he was the first out. Seeing him on on the TV was very exciting, remembering how he played water polo with us everyday and joined in with all our fun and games at the Seaview only last year. He didn’t get a medal but I am sure that reaching the final is a big achievement for anyone in the Olympics. I am going to try to watch some more of the games and show my support for the team.

The weirdest place on Earth:

I always knew there was something very strange about Lanzarote.
Everything is on one side of the island with just mountains or volcanos blocking out the middle.
The other side is never really spoken about.
Mount Tindaya on Fuerteventura
You don’t hear about any attractions over there or towns or anything.
I joke and say it must be like Area 51 and if you get too close you’re gone.
Owen and I rented a car, so we could go into the capital of Lanzarote to do some shopping. We soon got bored of shopping and decided whilst we had the car, we would check out some of the other resorts. We soon got bored of that too. Everywhere is the same typical holiday beach fronts with tacky souvenirs shops. Then, like the free birds we are, we took the wrong turn. We couldn’t believe our eyes when we found ourselves driving up the mountain into no-mans land. Soon we were almost climbing vertically up the road. It’s a very exciting feeling when you don’t know what to expect. We reached the top and could see for miles. There was literally nothing else around. I didn’t fancy looking down for too long though, after a while you can’t help but think about the possibilities of falling off. Ouch. What goes up must come down. When we set off back down the other side, I realised Lanzarote was a very strange place. There were some towns sign posted, all with odd names. We passed a few and it was like they had been shut down; no-one around and no lights on. I don’t believe that anyone could live in the middle of nowhere. We went for miles and miles, weaving in and out of the cliff edges, before coming to anything. We now realise that the reason you hear nothing about the other side is because there simply is nothing there. It was very interesting to go over the mountain and I would do it again, because the views are beautiful and I guess you see Lanzarote in its natural way; the way it was before the tourists got their hands on it.

Training Days:

There is a brand new entertainments team in town. They are based in a hotel in Playa Blanca, not far from my hotel. They are all brand new to the job, apart from their head entertainer, who I met last year on training and was also good friends with; so its lovely to see old faces.
Training
Anyway, it seems that none of them are ‘dancers’, so they called me in for some serious help. It really put my skills to the test, as I had to teach them the shows pretty much from scratch. All the girls were very enthusiastic and willing to learn and listen. It can be a bit nerve racking thinking that you have to teach adults. With children it’s easier to tell them what to do, as they normally naturally respect you. However, with the new girls, I had never met them and didn’t know their backgrounds or ability but it was actually great fun and most of all they were so grateful to me after. It had been a win-win situation. I guess we all learnt a lot and again, it’s another step forward on the experience train for me.

Texas Rancho:

We spent the day at the Texas Rancho Zoo.
As you’d expect, it’s a zoo type park with a Texas theme.
There were lots of animals to see, farm animals and wild animals, crocodiles, tigers and a buffalo.
Birds of Prey show
We made sure to watch all the shows like the parrot show and birds of prey show. It makes you realise how intelligent the birds are, as they can do some very impressive tricks.
My favourite was the sea lion show. I loved how you could see their personalities coming through. They could even sing and dance. There was an option where you could pay to swim with them, so by the end of the season that is a must do on my list. We did get our photos taken with one, a lovely souvenir. Liz had a great day out to. It wasn’t quite like the whale shows she saw in Florida, but never the less, it was a lovely day and I will certainly be recommending it to guests.

The Insane Boat Ride Home:

The ferry boat was not very big at all and the day was still nice, everyone was trying to get outside to sit in the sun at the front of the boat. We got a seat, luckily. As we started to get further out to sea, we could feel the sea was getting rougher and the waves were starting to splash the people hanging over the edge.
Ferry on rough seas
Then we must have hit a mega wave, because crash! everyone was soaking, people had fallen over and children were crying, within 2 seconds the deck had gone from packed to just a few dare-devils left and us of course. The boat became a roller-coaster thrill ride, going up and crashing down. My knuckles went white from gripping on the sides. It kept crossing my mind that in a roller-coaster your strapped in, how easy it could be to get thrown overboard, yet I kept saying the crew of the boat would stop us if they thought it too dangerous. So we carried on, eventually the sea calmed down, and by this point we were all cold and soaked head to toe in salty sea water, which was beginning to dry up and crystallise on my face, not the most comfortable I’ve felt. On the plus side, we spotted loads of flying fish.

Liz comes to visit:

Let the adventures begin. Big sis has come to visit me for a whole week, so we will properly squeeze in as much holiday time as we can possibly achieve.
Our first adventure would be across the waters to Fuerteventura.
We took the ferry across and the sea was smooth and the sun shining.
Fuerteventura
This was great, as we had planned to go to the water park in Fuerteventura.
It didn’t take too long at all, about 45 minutes. I was expecting a replica version of Lanzarote, as they’re so close, how different could they be? Well I was wrong, they were very different for sure. Firstly, the sand on the beaches was white and the landscape was similar, lots of rocky nothingness, but it seemed to have a different more inviting atmosphere. As our bellies rumbled, we headed for a small but well presently café. We all had a smoothie and a sandwich. I had a simple ham and cheese, but it was the best ham and cheese I had ever had! With our bellies filled, we went on our search for the water park. The guy said 10 minutes right, but I think we turned left but I guess it gave us a chance to see a bit more.
One thing I noticed was it seemed a lot more residential, Spanish children playing in a park, real houses not just hotels. My favourite thing about it was that it felt like I was on holiday; it was so far away from work, I felt relaxed.

Hospital:

I’m back at work now, after being in hospital. It was a very strange experience. A little bit scary, if I am honest. I have never been an in-patient in hospital before; not even in the UK. I had gone in expecting just a course of antibiotics and ended up staying in 3 nights.
In Patient
The nurses were great; even the ones that spoke little English really made you feel as comfortable as possible. I was put on a drip with all sorts of things going into me. Good job I trusted the nurses. I was also not allowed any food or even any water. Owen was superb. I was getting really lonely and upset because I just wanted to get out. He came to visit and even stayed for the night. The funniest part was at meal times, along came the nurse with a big tray of food, I was thinking mmm… I must be allowed to eat again; but no, they handed it to Owen, and nothing for me. I think Owen enjoyed his stay at he hospital. Anyway, I am all better now and back to my full health. I am taking extra care with my diet and making sure I am not out in the sun more than I have to be. I was actually excited to get back into the swing of things at work. The novelty soon wore off.

Submarine:

I went on a submarine safari – on a bright yellow submarine. It went about 30 metres below sea level and I saw some great underwater life. It was unbelievable how many fish were just swimming next to the window. There were also some ship wrecks down there, which were incredible.
Yellow Submarine
I was thinking about the history of how it sunk and what chaos it must have been, and then they announced that it had been purposely sunk to create a new reef for the fish. Well that sunk my imagination too.
The main attraction was an 8 foot sting ray we spotted swimming past, not like you could miss it. But to make sure everyone got a good look, a diver went down to feed it and took it close to every window on the sub. The best thing was when you could be underneath it. Its mouth looked as if it was smiling and it had a personality. You only stay underwater for about 40 minutes but it’s enough time to get you thinking about how much more must be out there. I mean, there is a lot of ocean out there and I have only seen the smallest part of it.
